If I were to ask you where you got your wisdom, what would you say? Would you say I got my wisdom from school? Would you say I got my wisdom from my father? Would you say I got my wisdom from my own life? Would you be willing to say I got my wisdom from Jan's life experiences? Would you be interested in learning from my wisdom in order to find ways to keep yourself healthy?
When I got deathly ill I had to find ways to save my life because the medical profession new nothing of why or what had made me sick. Alternative practitioners were great but I was too sick and there wasn't enough experience in their own practices to truly know how to heal me. I am speaking of environmental pollutants and their effect on the human body, mind, and spirit. I was in a position to have to heal and research its possibility myself.
In my abundant and frantic research I found an article that attributed every illness from the start of the industrial revolution to a direct link to a toxic chemical. Now when you read 'toxic chemical' what do you think? Do you think of Agent Orange that soldiers in WW II were exposed to? Do you think of DDT that used to be spread around swamps and fields? Do you think of pesticides sprayed on your food? Do you think of the bottle of Windex under your sink or your laundry detergent, the perfume in your shampoo, or the Lysol you spray for germs? Because if you don't think of any of the former household products that you use everyday, please, please, please, do so.
I won't go into the particular chemicals in these products because there are too many to list but know this, you can get an MSDS sheet on every cleaning product or personal product in your home. If the MSDS sheet is not free on the net, write to the company. Legally they must make it available. And then check the individual chemicals for other resources because sometimes MSDS sheets minimize harm. Formaldehyde for instance is listed as odorless and harmless. I can tell you that it is not odorless because I can smell it. It is not harmless either. It damages the neurological system and some individuals have had to be sent to a rehabilitation center for treatment from inhaling formaldehyde over time.
The solution: white vinegar. Buy a spray bottle or empty a spray bottle filled with another product, rinse it thoroughly, then add half white vinegar and half water. This solution is anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal. Spray it on windows, counters, tile, wood furniture, floors, or put some vinegar in your laundry to get rid of smells. I use it an everything.
Years ago I had a single father as a client in my psychotherapy practice. He was distraught and frantic about what he was going to do with his five-year-old autistic daughter. To me he stunk of the laundry detergent Gain and I asked him what other household products he used. As he listed them, he also told me about the processed quick lunches he gave his daughter, and the plastic toys in her bedroom. It was no wonder the child was having such a difficult time. Plastic is petrochemical. Processed lunches are filled with preservatives, pesticides, and sometimes hormones and antibiotics from meat products.
Over the course of a few months this father changed his toxic products to non-toxic products, fed his daughter healthier lunches and treats, and soon noticed that his daughter's symptoms had abated quite a bit. I tell you this so you can think more seriously about the products you breathe into your body. If you think they just breathe out again, please think further. Your lungs are your body's air filtration system. Your organs need fresh air, especially your brain, so when you give them poisons to breathe in -- well, do I have your attention now?
I knew a realtor in Santa Fe, NM. He had been holding open houses for years. New houses are full of chemicals. Formaldehyde is one of the nastiest chemicals and is in everything and I mean EVERYTHING. His office put in a new carpet during that time. Then he remodeled a part of his home. Within a short time he was experiencing symptoms that did not allow him to go into a home with any new products. Houses take 10-12 years to off-gas formaldehyde by the way. He was overexposed and his body got sick. Overexposure can happen easily. If each of your products meets the government standards do you think all your products combined still meet the government standards? Add it up -- the government standards are often minimized to accommodate large companies making billions of dollars. Read labels and check many sites to see what those chemicals do to the human body. You will be horrified. And know this: you are in control because without your dollar these companies will have to change what they ask you to buy.
I can tell you with no wavering statements that becoming environmentally and chemically sensitive is hell. HELL. Once you become effected by environmental chemicals you will have no other choice but to change your habits. Write to me and I can tell you what I went through. There is only one hospital in this nation that knows anything about how to work with the body once it is cellularly damaged and that hospital is in Dallas and costs $10,000 a month. If you think your insurance will cover it, think again.
I do consultations on this issue. Contact me for a fee schedule. I counsel MCS and other environmentally effected individuals. And once environmental toxins effect your adrenal glands, your immune system, your brain functioning, liver, and more, you cannot take a pill to get well. Getting well is a complete process, often different for each person depending upon which organs were effected and by what. It takes sometimes years to figure out what you need to do for the rebuilding process.
I cannot stress this enough, please go through your house. Put all your products on the kitchen table and spend some time investigating them. All you need for a clean house is white vinegar, water, and a spray bottle.
Write to me with questions or comments. I have spent the last 12 years researching all this material. Why? To save my own life. Now I want to impart the knowledge I have so painstakingly accumulated to you. Don't wait until you are diagnosed with cancer, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, or other chronic illnesses before you change these minor things in your lifestyle. Once you get sick, it isn't minor anymore.
Until next time,
Jan

Are We Ready Yet?
Just in case you have had enough of breathing in toxins, I'd like to ask you: are you ready yet? Ready for what? Ready to stop buying unhealthy products. Almost every product we buy has a dangerous aspect to it. We can choose to get overwhelmed by it or we can start to recognize the products that are in our best interest and buy only those products. Whether the item is clothing sprayed with pesticides, formaldehyde, or toxic dyes, or conventionally grown produce sprayed with pesticides, or household cleaners imbibed with toxic odors or home building supplies loaded with formaldehyde, glues and other toxic ingredients we have our work cut out for us. And why do we have to work so hard to undue the toxic life we have created for ourselves? Because the FDA Toxic Substance Act hasn't been updated since the 1970's and too many companies hold too much power in making you think you need what they are selling. Do you use Windex -- use white vinegar instead. Do you use Bounce, Gaiam now sells non-toxic dryer sheets. Do you use Tide - Seventh Generation has non-toxic laundry detergent.
New companies are being born every year to antidote the toxicity in our environment. Buy the Green America directory sold on line or at Whole Foods and find companies that sell whatever you need. That's how I got help with stores I could not find on the avenue. In previous blogs I mentioned the powerful benefits and multiples uses of white vinegar. I've written about the need to eat organic as much as possible. I've given tips on staying healthy.
Today I want to offer a service that people write and call me about. I stopped this service when I changed my original website to feature only articles on writing and publishing but which I now want to add to this awareliving blog. So here is my offer,
If you want help getting your life turned around so that your cleaning supplies, clothing, remodeling and other concerns slowly get recast in a healthy direction, I offer fifteen minute phone consultations for $25.00. In the past I have helped a therapist from Washington tell her clients not to wear perfume in her office. She was fearful no one would want to use her services if she asked them to change their products for her. One woman in Georgia had health reactions to a remodeling she did in her basement. I have consulted with people from all over the country on a variety of issues involving toxicity, health and reorganizing their lifestyles. I love doing this. In the past decade I have done a great deal of research and by trial and error have learned how to heal from environmental toxicity. Although I have always had a sensitive nose and can still smell formaldehyde and other pollutants that are declared odorless, I do not get sick the way I used to. I understand the need to breathe without discomfort or disability.
I nearly died from toxic mold and had to learn how to detox from that too. I have been through enough to help you with your problems and concerns. Just contact me through this blog and I will call or email you.
Do you have MCS, EMF, or other environmental sensitivities? Most of us do. The word allergy is a misnomer. It is simply a one or two on a scale of ten on toxicity. It is not surprising that cancer, autism, ADD, COPD, RLS, or any of the other illnesses we are getting by the millions are becoming plague-like. What are we breathing and eating and putting on our bodies? Think about it. If you think you are healthy enough not to take this blog seriously have your doctor give you a blood test for toxicity. Hillary Clinton had one as well as other members of the European Union and they were horrified at the results. Does your home have a carpet or plywood and particle board furniture? Just how much toxic overload do you think you can handle before you get a medical diagnosis that will force you to make the changes you can start doing NOW?
Think you have no power to stop the toxins in your world? Think again. Every dollar you spend is a vote for what you want companies to continue producing? Put your dollars in some other company's pocket and watch companies who make toxic products change their tunes. You, as consumer, are the only ones with the power. I want to say that again: YOU, AS CONSUMER, ARE THE ONLY ONES WITH THE POWER.
Think about this message. It might just save your life. Contact me. Let me help you.
Until next time,
stay healthy,
Jan

Jan's Healing Chicken Soup and more ...
This is the season for colds. I've already encountered several people under the weather trying to get well. So I'm offering my own recipe for a healing chicken soup I created to help you get the foods you need to heal. In the past I have had neighbors and friends request I make this soup for them because it works. So here it is:
Jan's Healing Chicken Soup
6 or 8 large chicken legs (I use organic chickens-no use getting additives in your healing soup)
a handful of cut up fresh parsley (vitamin C)
2 cloves of garlic cut up (garlic is an anti-bacterial and helps kill infections)
1 onion sliced (onions clear out mucous)
a pinch of cayenne pepper (pepper helps raise the body's temperature to fight infections)
1 stalk of celery diced (celery helps detox and adds vit c)
1 carrot cut up (adds antioxidants and root vegetables help to ground the body)
salt and pepper (add celtic salt to get the trace minerals you need. Morton's salt has dextrose (sugar) and aluminum in it yuk)
2 or 3 chopped tomatoes (value of tomatoes increases when cooked)
a large handful of spinach (iron)
a pinch of thyme(thyme helps with coughs and respiratory problems)
a small handful of chopped mushrooms (mushrooms aid in immune function)
Put everything in a pot and add water until it reaches about five inches above all ingredients. Let simmer for about 2 1/2 hours. Take out the chicken and cut off bone - add back into soup.
That's it. Could it be easier? Now go make your soup and get well. Remember not to eat dairy when you are sick as dairy creates mucous. Drink as much liquid as possible and drink water to help keep you hydrated and to flush out what your body doesn't need.
If you are so inclined to take a hot bath - add some epsom salt to detox. Also, on the top of your ankle is a reflexive lymphatic point. Rub it and when you feel tender spots stay there and breathe deeply. Get that lymphatic system working. It is a crucial part of the body that helps your system rid itself of what is not needed for good health. The body is amazing. It holds all the answers to wellness.
If you want to sip tea during the day remember to add ginger, cinnamon, and parsley to your tea. Honey in hot water with lemon (real lemon not the bottled stuff) is great too. Honey helps coat the throat so if your throat is raw take a little honey on a teaspoon and swallow it. Yum!
Also know that elderberry cough drops - brand Zand - is fantastic. Elderberry drops in tincture form is great too. Elderberry helps the immune system and the cough drops are great for soothing a stinging throat.
If you have any questions about foods please drop me a line. I love researching the values of food. But remember that I am speaking about whole organic foods, not packaged foods with preservatives that help you system open to distress in the first place. Don't believe me? Check out any package and research the ingredients in it. God has given us everything we need to heal in nature. Seek it out.
One more thing: If you have a fever and the fever won't lower do not hesitate to call your doctor or any health practitioner. Although I am not a proponent of antibiotics there are times when our bodies need them. If you take antibiotics remember to take a probiotic with each pill. Antibiotics kill good bacteria as well as bad so you want to replace the healthy ones. Probiotics are healthy bacteria.
Until next time,
Jan

Stressed and Depressed During this Holiday Season?
If you live in a TV commercial, then your holiday will be fun, Santa will slide down the chimney, your loved one will give you diamonds, the kids will love their gifts, and the turkey will come out of the oven perfectly golden brown, your family members will be sober no matter how much two-buck-Chuck wine they drink, there will be no family heated discussions, the smiles will be abundant, and it might even snow so you can make that perfect 8' snowman. But I don't know anyone who lives in a TV commercial, do you? So here is where TV and reality enter the great divide because for most people this holiday season they be anything but perfect.
In fact, for many American families and individuals this year this will be a time of grieving for children killed in war, houses forfeited in the housing market, jobs unavailable in the job market, and homes lost in fires, tornadoes, earthquakes, or floods.Try as we might to have a great season this holiday it might still be filled with grief, disappointment, sadness, loss, and hardship.
As a psychotherapist of almost thirty years I talk to people every year whose problems are heightened by the holidays.
If you or someone you know is going through a rough time this holiday season and need to talk to someone, please pass this blog entry along to them. During the holidays I like to pay forward the many blessings I have received while in my own hours of need during the year. My usual hourly fee for counseling is $100. But for a brief holiday special I am offering a 45 minute consultation for $35. That's less than half my hourly rate. In that consultation I will help you:
1. get through what you are going through this holiday season
2. offer support and ways to cope
3. connect you with community support.
Often these times just bring a need to have someone listen with compassion and kindness. Don't go through your pain alone isolating yourself from receiving help just a phone call away.
Contact me through this blog or email me at jan_marquart@yahoo.com to let me know when you want to speak and we can arrange one or more consultations to get you through the holidays.
Send me a money order or cashier's check. I do not take credit cards. This rate is good from now through December 29. It is my gift to you because when I needed help it was given to me. This is my way of paying forward the blessings that came from others during my dark hours of the soul.
And wishing you a peaceful heart in this holiday season,
Jan

Do You Know What to do for Your Immune System
I know nutrition can be confusing. One year authorities tell us to eat or drink something for our health and the next year they tell us to avoid it. Drug companies brag about a new drug and then its being pulled off the market. Keeping healthy is at best a trying adventure. So let me tell you about three simple food items to help boost your immune protection. In my experience, when in doubt, head towards the grocery store for vegetables, fruits, herbs, and spices. All the healing supplies we need for most of our health delimmas come from nature.
Three items you might have in your house right now are going to be important in getting through the winter months.
1. Cayenne pepper - You know that when you increase your temperature you have a better chance of fighting viruses, right? That's actually how peppers got hotter. When the plant was infected with a virus it increased its potency so it could fight the infection. That's exactly the process that needs to occur in humans when we get sick. And what better way to get healthy than to add hot peppers to our foods. Cayenne pepper is a wonderful healing plant. Add a pinch of it in soups or sauces. Add it to a cup of hot tea and increase the tea's power. The pepper will make you sweat, raise your temperature, and fight off that virus. Cayenne pepper is also an expectorant, so drinking it when your lungs are full of mucus in a little hot water will break up the congestion.
2. Garlic - I bet you have a head of garlic in your kitchen right now. Chop a clove and swallow with water. Allicin, garlic's active ingredient, is an antifungal, antibacterial and antivirus. What more could you want in winter when bugs are in the air we breathe?
3. Green tea - Green tea prohibits bacteria and viruses. Have a cup several times a day. Six cups of green tea a day also serves as a detoxification strategy. Keeping yourself detoxed is a good way to keep your body clean.
That's it. Three foods you probably don't even have to leave your home to buy. Start using them now- a little each day. Also I do want to add that you should not use any anti-bacterial hand solutions. They suppress the immune system, if studies I've run across are accurate, they smell of alcohol which is not good to inhale, and they don't do anything to prevent colds or flu germs that linger in the air.
Stay healthy,
Until next time,
Jan

The Magic Vegetable
When I was a kid my grandmother used to cut an onion in thin round circles, sprinkle them with a little white sugar, wrap the dish of onions tightly in Saran wrap, put the plate in the refrigerator and wait. In the morning there would be about a teaspoon of sweet onion juice on the plate. What did she do with this? She had me swallow it to relieve the congestion forming from a cold creating inflammation in my lungs. Shortly after swallowing the sweet liquid I would begin to cough up the congestion. Something else you can do, although I will admit I haven't tried this yet. Put slices of a raw onion on the soles of your feet. Then put socks on to keep the slices in place. The onions will draw out the infection or fever. The bottoms of your feet are great for detoxing. Let them do the work while you rest.
Onions are an anti-inflammatory. When we get a cold our lungs can become inflammed. Stay away from diary like cheese, milk, ice cream or cottage cheese which cause inflammation and cook an onion instead. Here is my favorite recipe.
Bake two quartered onions in a 350 degree oven rubbed with olive oil, sprinkled with basil and spearment for at least 1 1/2 hours. Before serving sprinkle them with balsamic vinegar. Delicious!
Onions have dozens of uses but I recommend that you always have lots of onions on hand. If it causes bad breath -- not to worry, eat a little parsley and the smell on your breath will disappear or rinse your mouth with a solution of baking soda and warm water.
Until next time,
eat your onions and stay well,

Ribbons
It's hard to believe, but I went into a local store and saw ads for Christmas already. I browsed the shelves wondering how we jumped to Christmas before Thanksgiving. But since the shopping bug is being planted in all of us I must ask you. Do you know about the Ribbons deals by Amway? I promise I'm not going to post Amway information on this site each week, but I must say, I am overwhelmed with the high consciousness of this company and the deals and products they offer. So bare with me while I tell you about this. If you shop for several people you will want to know this information.
You can get five gifts for the price of four for $120; it is called the Ribbon Variety 5-packs. How easy and inexpensive is that? Go to www.Amway.com/Awareliving. Click on Products and then Ribbon Collections. Check out the items you can give with a gift card. The gift card does not indicate the price of the gift on the card. The recipient chooses the gift they want, not the gift they must accept because the card is limited to one thing. There are so many items on the ribbon list I'm not going to replay them all. Choices include electronics, small appliances, jewelry, housewares and more. Check it out.
Okay, short and sweet. That's it for now.
Happy shopping.
Until next time,
Jan
